Nathaniel Mendez-Laing Denies Assault Allegation in Court

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, the former Premier League winger now with MK Dons, has appeared in court to deny an allegation that he assaulted his wife at the couple’s home in Staffordshire.

The 34-year-old, who once lit up the top flight with Cardiff City and came through at Wolves, is accused of attacking his wife, Saira Mendez-Laing, during an incident at their luxury property in Shenstone in June.

Police were called to the address and Mendez-Laing was arrested and later charged with assault by beating.

He appeared at Cannock magistrates’ court on Friday, arriving on crutches, and spoke only to confirm his name, age and address before entering a not guilty plea to a single count of assault by beating.

The court heard that Saira, the mother of Mendez-Laing’s child, was allegedly struck repeatedly over the head and suffered an injury to her arm. The confrontation is said to have started after a disagreement about a phone. Mendez-Laing denies any physical attack.

Charges were authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service last month.

District Judge Joseph O’Connor granted the winger conditional bail and listed the case for trial in January next year, setting up a high-profile hearing in the middle of the League One season.

Mendez-Laing, born in Birmingham, represents Guatemala at international level through his mother and maternal grandmother, both of whom were born in the Central American nation. He scored four goals in 20 Premier League appearances for Cardiff in the 2019/20 campaign before leaving the club in September 2020.

Off the pitch, last June marked a personal milestone as he married Saira, with MK Dons sharing a photograph from the wedding on their official social media channels alongside a congratulatory message.

MK Dons, currently 19th in League One, declined to comment on the case, citing the ongoing legal proceedings.
