Newcastle United Targets Geny Catamo for January Transfer
Newcastle United’s recruitment drive has barely paused since the summer window closed. After a window built around youth and upside, the club’s scouts are already deep into their January work – and a new wide option has moved firmly onto the radar.
Geny Catamo, Sporting CP’s lively winger, has emerged as one of the names under serious consideration. The 25-year-old Mozambique international has drawn a cluster of Premier League admirers, with Newcastle among those stepping up their checks in recent weeks.
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have all watched Catamo closely, while Aston Villa continue to track him as well. The list of suitors is growing, and so is the player’s case.
Catamo has started the season sharply for Sporting, producing two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances. Those numbers back up what scouts have been seeing: a wide player who carries a threat, works hard, and looks ready for a bigger stage.
Newcastle are not arriving late to this story. Bailey reports that several clubs, including Premier League sides, made contact with Catamo’s camp earlier in the summer and have kept him under regular observation since. The interest has been there for months. The problem has been Sporting’s stance.
Sunderland found that out the hard way. The Black Cats made Catamo a primary target in the last window but got nowhere in talks. Sporting refused to negotiate and pointed every bidder straight to the €60 million (£51 million) release clause. Sunderland simply would not go that high and walked away.
Their admiration has not disappeared, but the landscape has changed. Now Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa all sit in the same queue, waiting to see if Sporting blink.
There is one element that will encourage every English club in the chase: Catamo’s own ambition. Bailey reports that the winger is “more than open” to a move to the Premier League and attracted by the chance to test himself in England. For a buying club, that matters. It removes one layer of doubt.
What remains completely unclear is whether Sporting will shift their position when January arrives. At this stage, there is no sign that Newcastle have made an offer or opened formal negotiations. Everything hinges on that release clause. If Sporting hold the line at €60 million, the conversation changes. If they soften, the race becomes real.
Newcastle’s recruitment team now face the central question: is a winger with Catamo’s profile, production and potential worth a fee in the region of £51 million, or does that kind of money demand a different calibre of signing? The answer may shape not just their January, but the next phase of their rebuild.
