Newcastle United Pursues Botafogo Prodigy Alvaro Montoro

Newcastle United’s summer-long hunt for emerging talent has taken a familiar twist: another teenager, another tug of war, and this time the trail runs through Rio.

While Matthias Jaissle has already seen his squad infused with a string of players aged 21 or under, the recruitment drive at St James’ Park is clearly not being run with only the next nine months in mind. Newcastle’s gaze has been fixed on the horizon, and it has now settled on Botafogo midfielder Alvaro Montoro.

The 19-year-old Argentine has drawn a crowd. According to Globo Esporte journalist Letícia Marques, Newcastle are one of seven clubs tracking the teenager, alongside AC Milan, Ajax, Sporting CP, Real Betis, Wolverhampton Wanderers and MLS side Atlanta United.

“The list of clubs interested in Montoro is long: Atlanta United, Betis, Milan, Newcastle, Ajax, Sporting, and Wolverhampton,” Marques reported. She added that there were signs of an offer in the region of €20 million, but talks stalled when Botafogo made their stance clear: no sale, not now.

A Price on Potential – But Not for This Window

Clubs from Europe have broadly landed on the same valuation. Per Marques, most suitors from the continent see Montoro in the €20 million (£17.3 million) bracket. Botafogo, however, are in no rush to cash in and have already turned down a proposal at that level from another South American side.

Once, that might have been unthinkable. Earlier this year, Botafogo were braced to sell both Montoro and Danilo to ease financial strain. The plan, as reported by Marques, was to move them on in the first half of the year.

Then the money arrived.

The entry of GDA as a new investor changed the club’s balance sheet and, with it, their transfer strategy. Botafogo suddenly had the power to say no. Now they expect to keep Montoro and Danilo at least until the end of the Brazilian season, and they are negotiating from a position of strength.

A Long Game for Newcastle

That stance does not close the door on Newcastle. It simply pushes it further down the corridor.

Montoro is understood to be keen on a move to Europe, and his camp has been informed that Botafogo are prepared to revisit the idea of a transfer once the domestic campaign concludes. For a club like Newcastle, building a recruitment model around upside and future value, that timeline is inconvenient but not impossible.

“The player is interested in playing in Europe, but understands the club's decision not to negotiate his transfer at this time,” Marques reported. It is the kind of line that encourages patience rather than panic.

Rising Stock in Rio

Montoro’s appeal is not built on hype alone. Since arriving from Vélez Sarsfield last year, he has already clocked 59 appearances for Botafogo, contributing six goals and seven assists. Those numbers, at 19, in a demanding environment, explain why scouts keep returning.

Botafogo have moved quickly to protect their asset. The midfielder has recently signed a new deal, reportedly running through December 2030, a contract that effectively hands the Brazilian club the leverage to name their price when the time comes.

For Newcastle, the question is no longer whether Montoro is on the radar. He is. The real test will come when Botafogo finally invite bids: how far are they prepared to go once €20 million is no longer enough for a teenager who clearly sees his future on European soil?
