Ousmane Dembélé's Dominant Performance in Champions League Opener
Ousmane Dembélé didn’t answer with a soundbite. He answered with a demolition.
Two goals. Two assists. Sixty-four minutes that turned a jittery start to the season into a statement night, as his side opened their Champions League campaign with a ruthless 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava.
For a player accused so often of drifting through games, this was the opposite. He grabbed this one by the throat.
From stop-start to full throttle
Dembélé arrived at this fixture under a cloud of frustration. His campaign had been chopped into awkward fragments: forced off in the first half against Rennes, absent for the trip to Lille, reduced to a 20‑minute cameo against Monaco. No rhythm, no continuity, plenty of murmurs.
Those doubts didn’t survive the first hour in Europe.
Slovan Bratislava will not be mistaken for one of the giants of the competition, but Dembélé treated them as the perfect stage to relaunch himself. He roamed everywhere, swapping flanks, dropping inside, constantly demanding the ball. He drove at defenders, took risks, missed a couple he might have buried, and still walked off with two goals and two assists to his name.
Both of those assists went to Ferran Torres, a partnership that clicked into place with a sharpness that has been missing from his game in recent weeks. The numbers told one story. His body language told another. This was a player who looked like he’d been waiting weeks to be turned loose.
Luis Enrique cut the show short on 64 minutes, protecting his forward with the job already emphatically done. By then, the home crowd had seen enough to know who owned the night.
“Scoring, creating, winning – everything I love”
Speaking to Canal+ after the match, Dembélé’s words matched the energy of his performance. There was no attempt to hide how difficult the past few weeks had been.
“After a somewhat difficult start where I did not play much... I only played 20 or 45 minutes, it was not easy to come back,” he admitted. “Today, I am happy, I have enough energy to play 60 minutes. We had to win because we started the season badly, and we needed a strong start in the Champions League.”
The relief was obvious, but so was the intent.
“We are happy, and I am happy with my performance too,” he said. “We also have to climb up the league standings, we have to keep going.”
This wasn’t a player basking in one big night. It sounded more like someone who sees it as a starting point.
“Scoring, creating goals, and winning, everything I love about football,” he added. “Our start was poor, against Lens and in the league too, we struggled. It was a wonderful evening, we have to continue in this way, and to be more ambitious.”
Contract talk parked, ambitions clear
Around him, the noise about his future continues. A contract extension hangs in the air, but Dembélé insisted that once the whistle blows, those questions fade into the background.
“When I am on the pitch, I do not think about that (extending my contract),” he said. “I needed to regain my fitness after the World Cup and a short break. I feel I am getting better all the time. I hope to get more playing time to recover my rhythm. And likewise with the national team.”
That word – rhythm – keeps circling back. On this evidence, it’s returning quickly.
The wider target is clear enough. Domestic form has been shaky, the start against Lens and in the league described bluntly by Dembélé as “poor.” The Champions League, then, becomes both a platform and a test of character.
“We have won the Champions League twice, and every team wants to beat us,” he reminded. “The new players also need to learn quickly. We want to win many matches and titles.”
It sounded less like nostalgia and more like a warning. To opponents. To teammates. Perhaps even to himself.
On a night when his team needed a spark, Dembélé provided a floodlight. If this is the version that turns up week after week, the early-season stumbles will soon feel distant – and the conversation will shift from whether he stays to how far he can carry them.
