Premier League Matchday 2 Predictions: Projected Line-Ups
With the opening weekend out of the way and first impressions still fresh, the Premier League rolls into Matchday 2 with managers already nudged into early decisions. Systems are emerging, new signings are bedding in, and the guesswork around starting XIs is beginning to narrow.
These projected line-ups lean on those first selections, fitness reports, suspensions and tactical habits. The margin for error shrinks with every game.
Crystal Palace vs Manchester City
Crystal Palace are tipped to stay bold. A 3-4-2-1 suggests Roy Hodgson wants numbers behind the ball but enough threat to punish any City complacency.
Predicted Palace XI (3-4-2-1): Henderson; Tomiyasu, Richards, Canvot; Muñoz, Kamada, Wharton, Mitchell; McNeil, Pino; Mateta.
Tomiyasu’s versatility makes him ideal on the right of a back three, while Kamada and Wharton give Palace a technical core in midfield. Out wide, Muñoz and Mitchell must cover huge distances, shuttling between back five and front five. McNeil and Pino drifting inside behind Mateta offers Palace their creative spark.
Across from them, Manchester City are expected to roll out a familiar 4-2-3-1, but with some striking new faces.
Predicted City XI (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma; Khusanov, Rúben Dias, Gvardiol, O'Reilly; Anderson, Marc Guehi; Foden, Cherki, Semenyo; Haaland.
Rúben Dias and Gvardiol anchor the defence, while Haaland remains the obvious focal point. The intrigue lies just behind him. Foden and Cherki operating between the lines, Semenyo stretching play, and a double pivot featuring Anderson and Marc Guehi offers control with a hard edge. If this is the shape, City will look to suffocate Palace with the ball and then strike through Haaland’s ruthless movement.
Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest
Anfield should see Liverpool line up in a fluid 4-2-3-1, built around power and craft in equal measure.
Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson; Frimpong, Jacquet, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Gravenberch; Víctor Muñoz, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak.
Frimpong and Kerkez give Liverpool explosive width from full-back, while Van Dijk marshals Jacquet at the heart of defence. Szoboszlai and Gravenberch as a double pivot bring legs and range, but the real glamour lies ahead: Wirtz knitting play, Gakpo drifting inside, Víctor Muñoz offering another creative angle, all feeding Alexander Isak. It’s a front four that screams rotation, movement, and constant questions for Forest’s back line.
Nottingham Forest, on paper, look more pragmatic but hardly toothless in their 3-4-2-1.
Predicted Forest XI (3-4-2-1): Sels; Diomande, Milenkovic, Murillo; Aina, McAtee, Sangaré, Williams; Ndoye, Gibbs-White; Igor Jesus.
Sangaré’s presence in midfield is vital against Liverpool’s press, while Gibbs-White again carries much of the creative burden. Igor Jesus leads the line, supported by the intelligent runs of Ndoye. The wing-backs, Aina and Williams, must pick their moments to break forward. One wrong decision, and Liverpool will pounce.
Coventry City vs Hull City
A Championship clash with a Premier League spotlight. Coventry and Hull both look ready to go toe to toe in matching 4-3-3 systems.
Predicted Coventry XI (4-3-3): Rushworth; Van Ewijk, Thomas, Amenda, Jay da Silva; Yirenkyi, Grimes, Onyeka; Tchaouna, Awoniyi, Mason-Clark.
Grimes sits at the base, dictating tempo, while Onyeka and Yirenkyi provide energy and bite. Out wide, Tchaouna and Mason-Clark will try to isolate full-backs and open lanes for Awoniyi, who brings a powerful focal point.
Predicted Hull XI (4-3-3): Tzolakis; Ajayi, Egan, Mendy, Coyle; Crooks, Slater, Giles; Belloumi, McBurnie, Stroud.
Hull’s answer is direct and experienced. McBurnie offers an aerial threat and a target for early balls, with Belloumi and Stroud working the channels. Crooks and Slater drive from midfield, while Giles looks to supply from deeper areas. It has the feel of a game decided by which No 9 can impose himself more brutally.
Bournemouth vs Everton
At the Vitality, Bournemouth are expected to stick with an adventurous 4-2-3-1.
Predicted Bournemouth XI (4-2-3-1): Petrovic; Smith, Hill, António Silva, Truffert; Cook, Scott; Rayan, Kluivert, Tavernier; Evanilson.
Cook and Scott form the engine room, shielding a back four built around the highly rated António Silva. Ahead of them, Kluivert and Tavernier bring speed and guile, while Rayan operates between the lines. Evanilson leads the attack, tasked with turning half-chances into goals.
Everton, under pressure as ever, look set to mirror that shape.
Predicted Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Röhl, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Armstrong, Hackney; Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, George; Barry.
Tarkowski and Branthwaite remain the defensive core, with Mykolenko steady on the left. Armstrong and Hackney offer legs and balance in midfield. The creativity must come from Dewsbury-Hall, flanked by Ndiaye and George, with Barry at the tip. It’s a side built to be compact first, dangerous second.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United
A meeting of two clubs who want the ball, want territory, and want to attack. The predicted XIs underline that ambition.
Predicted Tottenham XI (4-2-3-1): Kinsky; Porro, Van Hecke, Senesi, Robertson; Tonali, Mateus Fernandes; Moore, Gallagher, Tel; Solanke.
Porro and Robertson give Spurs natural width from full-back. In midfield, Tonali and Mateus Fernandes promise control and bite. Gallagher’s energy in the No 10 role, flanked by Moore and the electric Tel, should support Solanke, who offers link play and penalty-box presence.
Newcastle are not likely to sit back.
Predicted Newcastle XI (4-2-3-1): Hornícek; Dedic, Thiaw, Botman, Lewis Hall; Steur, Miley; Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Barnes; Wissa.
Botman anchors the defence, with Lewis Hall pushing high on the left. Steur and Miley will be asked to handle Spurs’ press and spring transitions. Elanga and Barnes bring pace on the flanks, while Jacob Ramsey adds drive from central areas behind Wissa, who can hurt teams both on the counter and inside the box. This could turn into a running match.
Chelsea vs Brighton
Stamford Bridge should host one of the weekend’s most tactically intriguing contests. Chelsea are tipped to stay with a 3-4-2-1, a shape that suits their personnel.
Predicted Chelsea XI (3-4-2-1): Sanchez; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill; Gusto, James, Moises Caicedo, Hato; Palmer, João Pedro; Rogers.
Fofana, Lacroix and Colwill offer a blend of aggression and composure at the back. James and Gusto as wing-backs give Chelsea relentless width, with Moises Caicedo and Hato patrolling the middle. Palmer and João Pedro drifting behind Rogers provides a fluid, rotating front line. On paper, it’s a side built to dominate territory.
Brighton, as always, will not simply accept that script.
Predicted Brighton XI (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen; Wieffer, Vuskovic, Boscagli, Kadioglu; Ayari, Groß; Gómez, Hinshelwood, De Cuyper; Kostoulas.
Groß remains the brains of the operation in midfield, with Ayari alongside him. Kadioglu and Wieffer offer attacking thrust from full-back, while Gómez and De Cuyper work the half-spaces. Kostoulas leads the line, supported by Hinshelwood’s intelligent movement. Expect Brighton to play through pressure rather than around it.
Leeds United vs Brentford
Elland Road is set for a clash of styles, but the formations match.
Predicted Leeds XI (3-4-2-1): Trafford; Rodon, Bijol, Muharemovic; Bogle, Ampadu, Stach, Justin; Wilson, Aaronson; Calvert-Lewin.
Ampadu and Stach give Leeds a rugged spine in midfield, with Bogle and Justin asked to patrol the flanks. Aaronson’s creativity and Wilson’s directness sit just off Calvert-Lewin, who brings Premier League experience and aerial threat to the front line.
Predicted Brentford XI (4-2-3-1): Kelleher; Kayode, Ajer, Collins, Lewis-Potter; Janelt, Sangaré; Dango Ouattara, Jensen, Schade; Thiago.
Janelt and Sangaré offer steel in front of the back four, while Jensen orchestrates as the central playmaker. Out wide, Dango Ouattara and Schade provide pace and vertical running, leaving Thiago to exploit the spaces they create. Brentford’s transitions could define this game.
Sunderland vs Fulham
At the Stadium of Light, Sunderland’s projected 4-2-3-1 hints at balance and bravery.
Predicted Sunderland XI (4-2-3-1): Roefs; Meunier, Ballard, Alderete, Reinildo; Xhaka, Sadiki; Hume, Le Fée, Angulo; Brobbey.
Xhaka’s experience beside Sadiki offers structure in midfield. Le Fée brings vision between the lines, Angulo and Hume add energy, and Brobbey leads the line with power. It’s a side that can press, but also pick passes.
Fulham are expected to respond in kind with their own 4-2-3-1.
Predicted Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Castagne, Andersen, Bassey, Robinson; Berge, Iwobi; Bobb, King, Palacios; Gonzalo García.
Andersen and Bassey provide a solid defensive core, Robinson and Castagne push on from full-back. Berge and Iwobi give Fulham a mix of control and drive in midfield. Ahead of them, Bobb, King and Palacios support Gonzalo García, who will look to turn neat build-up into end product.
Manchester United vs Ipswich Town
Old Trafford expects dominance, and the predicted Manchester United XI reflects that assumption.
Predicted Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Tielemans, Andrey Santos; Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Dorgu; Matheus Cunha.
Tielemans and Andrey Santos set the rhythm from deep, Bruno Fernandes dictates in the No 10 role, and Mbeumo plus Dorgu stretch the pitch from wide areas. Matheus Cunha’s movement across the front line should drag Ipswich’s defence into awkward spaces.
Ipswich, though, arrive with a clear structure.
Predicted Ipswich XI (4-2-3-1): Scherpen; O'Shea, Diop, Greaves, Davis; Lukic, Núñez; Fatawu, Enciso, Maeda; Emersonn.
Lukic and Núñez anchor midfield, while Fatawu and Maeda bring raw pace out wide. Enciso’s creativity behind Emersonn gives Ipswich a punch on the break. United will likely see most of the ball, but one loose pass against this front four could prove costly.
Aston Villa vs Arsenal
Aston Villa’s predicted line-up hints at aggression against one of the league’s elite.
Predicted Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Suzuki; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Torres, Maatsen; McGinn, Kamara; Cash, Barkley, Garnacho; Buendía.
Wan-Bissaka and Maatsen offer contrasting full-back profiles: one a one-on-one specialist, the other an attacking outlet. McGinn and Kamara provide bite and balance in midfield. Ahead of them, Cash and Garnacho attack from the flanks, Barkley adds guile through the middle, and Buendía leads the line in a more fluid, false-nine style.
Arsenal’s predicted XI is not listed here, but the shape of Villa’s side tells its own story. They are not planning to sit back and survive. They want to trade punches.
Matchday 2 arrives with patterns starting to form, reputations already on the line, and new signings eager to prove they belong. The guesses will soon give way to certainties. Which managers will double down on their opening gambles, and who will blink first?
