Rangnick–Schöttel Rift Signals Change in Austrian Football

The power axis at the heart of Austrian football is cracking, and Friday now looms as judgment day.

According to Austrian outlets Kurier and Krone, the supervisory board of the ÖFB will meet at the end of the week to decide the fate of sporting director Peter Schöttel. After nine years in the federation’s inner circle, his departure now looks less like a question and more like a formality.

The reason is blunt and, by now, barely concealed: his relationship with national team coach Ralf Rangnick is considered broken beyond repair.

A partnership that stopped working

Inside the ÖFB, the sporting director has already been pushed to the sidelines. The federation has effectively removed him from the day‑to‑day sporting chain of command, a clear sign of where the power currently lies.

Marc Janko, former Austria international and now a pundit for Sky, lifted the curtain on the mood behind the scenes. Speaking about the situation, he said the developments were not exactly shocking: “If you ask around behind the scenes, then it is not hugely surprising.”

The core of the problem lies in the working relationship between Schöttel and Rangnick. Janko put it plainly: with Schöttel “and Ralf Rangnick, it did not really work properly”. For some time, Rangnick has been bypassing the sporting director on key issues, choosing to deal “via other people” instead.

Once that happens at the top of a football association, the structure rarely survives.

Success on the pitch, fractures off it

The timing makes the split all the more striking. On the pitch, the Schöttel era reads like one of the most successful chapters in recent ÖFB history.

The 59‑year‑old joined the federation in 2017 as U19 coach and was promoted to overall sporting director just two months later. From that point, Austria’s national team found a level of consistency it had long been chasing.

The ÖFB qualified for two consecutive European Championships, reaching the last 16 in both 2021 and 2024. The biggest breakthrough came last summer, when Austria reached a World Cup finals for the first time in 28 years. Their run ended in the round of 32 against eventual world champions Spain, but the symbolic barrier had been smashed.

Those achievements formed the backbone of Schöttel’s legacy. Yet they have not been enough to shield him from the internal power struggle now playing out around Rangnick.

The favourite to take over

The ÖFB has not officially named a successor. Still, the outlines of the next move are already emerging.

Krone reports that an internal favourite has taken shape: Sebastian Prödl. The former Bundesliga defender, best known for his long spell at Werder Bremen, has been running the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024 and has quickly built a strong reputation inside the association.

His work with the youth setup is said to be highly regarded. But one factor stands above all the rest: Prödl is believed to enjoy an exceptionally good relationship with Rangnick.

In a federation where the bond between coach and sporting director has just torn one regime apart, that single detail may decide who shapes Austria’s football future from here.
