Raúl Asencio Returns to Real Madrid Squad for Key Clash
José Mourinho has named his Real Madrid squad for Saturday’s league meeting with Rayo Vallecano, and one name jumps off the page: Raúl Asencio is back.
The young Spanish centre-back returns after more than a month on the sidelines, having battled through a muscular problem in the rectus femoris and then a setback in his shin. It has been a long, awkward pause in a career that has yet to truly start under Mourinho. He has not played a single minute for the Portuguese coach.
That could now change.
A defender back from the brink
Asencio’s last few weeks have been spent away from the spotlight, rebuilding quietly. He rejoined group training in recent days, completed full sessions without issue, and the medical staff finally cleared him. That was enough for Mourinho, who included him in the squad for the fifth round clash.
The timing is no coincidence. Madrid face a congested run of fixtures, with league games stacking up in midweek. Central defenders will be asked to go again and again. Mourinho, who likes control at the back and continuity in his line, suddenly has another body he can trust — or at least test.
For Asencio, it is more than a tactical opening. It is a lifeline.
A turbulent summer, on and off the pitch
This call-up effectively closes a stormy summer for the defender. He stood close to the exit door not long ago, with a move away from Real Madrid on the table before injury froze any negotiations over his future.
Off the pitch, the situation was even more complicated. In recent days he learned of his acquittal in the case linked to a video in which he appeared. At the same time, a court found him guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol on Gran Canaria last August.
Mourinho did not hide his anger. The coach drew a clear line in public: “A Real Madrid player remains a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day. What you do outside the club can harm your reputation and the club's reputation, and I am not happy.”
The message was unmistakable. Talent is not enough. Behaviour counts.
Now, fit again and with the legal noise temporarily settled, Asencio has one path left: football. He has to convince Mourinho on the grass, not in the press room.
A squad shaped by absences
While Asencio returns, others step aside. Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo all miss out on the squad to face Rayo. Their absence sharpens the need for fresh legs in defence and attack, and underlines why Mourinho has moved quickly to bring Asencio back into the fold.
The coach’s list blends established stars with emerging names:
- Goalkeepers: Courtois, Lunin, Sergio Mestre
- Defence: Asencio, Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Konaté, Cucurella, Carreras, Rüdiger, Dumfries
- Midfield: Bellingham, Camavinga, Valverde, Tchouaméni, Arda Güler, Bernardo Silva, Thiago Pitarch
- Attack: Vinícius, Endrick, Mbappé, Espí, Brahim Díaz, Diomandé
There is power and creativity everywhere you look. There is also competition in every line.
For Asencio, that is the reality. He returns to a dressing room packed with international stars and proven winners, with a coach who has already questioned his judgment off the field. The opportunity is there, but it will not come wrapped in comfort.
Rayo Vallecano might just be the night he starts to rewrite his story.
