Real Madrid Seek Statement Win in Seville to Claim La Liga Top Spot

Real Madrid know the maths are simple on Friday night: avoid defeat at La Cartuja and they go back to the top of La Liga. That won’t be what Jose Mourinho is thinking about. Not with the start his side have made. Not with the way this team has begun to smell blood.

Three games, three wins. The perfect opening to the 2026-27 season. Yet this trip to face Real Betis already feels like a first real checkpoint, the kind of away day that tells you what a title challenge is really made of.

Madrid arrive in form – and in full voice

The campaign started with a stutter. A narrow, laboured win over Espanyol two weeks ago, more grit than grace. Since then, the gears have meshed.

Back at the Bernabeu, Real Sociedad and Malaga were swept aside. Eight goals across those two matches, the attack finally snapping into rhythm. The patterns are sharper, the combinations quicker, the swagger more familiar.

Now comes the question: can that same ruthless edge travel to Seville?

La Cartuja will demand an answer. It usually does.

Betis’ flaws and Madrid’s warning

On paper, Betis offer Real Madrid something they like: a defence that can be exposed. There are gaps to run into, spaces between the lines, moments when concentration drifts. For an attack boasting Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, that looks inviting.

But the danger for Mourinho lies a little deeper, in the heart of the pitch.

The midfield battle will decide how much those forwards actually see of the ball. Betis plan to run everything through one man: Isco. The former Real Madrid playmaker is set to start against his old club, and he will be the talismanic figure Los Verdiblancos lean on for control, creativity and calm.

If Isco dictates the tempo, Madrid chase. If he’s crowded out, Betis lose their compass.

On the flanks, Marc Cucurella faces his own test. Shutting down Antony is non‑negotiable for Betis. Allow the Brazilian room to isolate his full-back, and Mourinho’s side gain the width and chaos they thrive on. Stop him, and Betis at least cut off one of Madrid’s more direct routes to goal.

A hostile ground and an ugly record

The setting does Real Madrid no favours. Trips to the green-and-white side of Seville have turned awkward in recent years.

The last time Los Blancos came away from a Betis home match with all three points was back in 2021, a tight 0-1 decided by a Dani Carvajal strike. Since then: three draws and a defeat. Too many dropped points for a club with Madrid’s ambitions, too many long evenings where the game slipped into Betis’ rhythm.

Mourinho will be desperate to rip up that recent script. He knows these are the fixtures that quietly decide titles, the nights where a slip can cost you more than just three points. Ending that unwanted run is not just about pride. It is about sending a message to the rest of Spain.

Of course, it will not come easily. It rarely does here.

The heavyweight trio and the need for steel

Real Madrid will lean heavily on their headline act. Bellingham, Vinicius and Mbappe are the obvious go-tos, the trio that changes games in a flash. Give them space, and they punish. Even if only two of them hit top form at La Cartuja, the odds tilt sharply towards the visitors and a return journey to the capital with another win in the bag.

But this isn’t a night for glamour alone.

Keeping things tight at the back will matter just as much as anything Mbappe does in transition or Vinicius does in the dribble. Betis carry genuine quality going forward, especially at home, and any lapse in concentration could drag Madrid into the kind of open contest Mourinho will want to avoid.

Real Madrid arrive in Seville with momentum, star power and the league summit within reach. What they leave with will say plenty about how far this team can go – and how long they intend to stay on top once they get there.
