Sacha Boey’s Bayern Future Takes Unexpected Turn
Bayern Munich looked ready to draw a line under the Sacha Boey experiment this summer. Now, they may be about to double down instead.
Sporting director Christoph Freund has confirmed that the French full-back, widely expected to leave before the Bundesliga transfer deadline, is suddenly more likely to stay put in Munich after a move failed to materialise.
“The probability is now greater that he'll stay here,” Freund said on Friday, a clear shift from the club’s earlier stance that Boey was one of the players they were prepared to move on.
The 25-year-old, signed amid high expectations, has endured a turbulent spell, battling injuries and fierce competition for minutes. Bayern had been keen to create room in the squad and on the wage bill, and Boey was among those earmarked for an exit.
The market said no. Or at least, not yet.
Freund stressed that Boey’s professionalism has never been in doubt. “He's always behaved in impeccable fashion. The plan was different, but this can happen in football,” he explained, acknowledging how quickly transfer strategies can be ripped up by timing, interest and closed windows.
That timing is now decisive. With the German window shut and other major leagues edging towards their own deadlines, the dynamic has flipped. Boey, once on the brink of the door, is now being spoken about as part of the squad again.
“When all transfer windows are closed and he's still here, then he'll remain a player in our squad,” Freund concluded.
For Boey, it is an unexpected second chance at one of Europe’s most unforgiving clubs. For Bayern, it may yet turn a nearly-departure into a useful depth piece in a long, demanding season.
