Sam Edozie Submits Transfer Request from Southampton

Sam Edozie has gone public. With the transfer window ticking into its final hours, the Southampton winger says he has formally submitted a transfer request and is pushing to leave the club.

The 23-year-old took his frustration to Instagram, revealing he has had “multiple offers” from clubs across Europe and claiming Southampton’s stance has repeatedly blocked his route out of St Mary’s.

Last summer, he wrote, a move was on the table. The club said no.
January brought another chance. Same answer.

“This summer, there have once again been multiple offers from clubs across Europe,” Edozie said, before alleging that Southampton have “requested as much as 50% of any future transfer fee, which has made those opportunities extremely difficult to pursue”.

Southampton have not yet responded publicly. BBC Sport have approached the club for comment.

Edozie arrived on the south coast from Manchester City in September 2022, a highly rated wide player expected to grow into a regular starter. Across two seasons he has managed 29 starts and 57 substitute appearances, flashes of promise without a sustained run.

The lack of game time sits at the heart of his grievance. He stressed he was not getting “the minutes I need” at Southampton and framed his request as a decision driven by career urgency rather than impatience.

“A football career is short, and I believe it is important I now have the opportunity to go somewhere I can play regularly, continue to develop and make the most of my career as a player,” he said.

For now, Edozie is already out of the building on paper. The former England Under-20 international has joined Belgian side Anderlecht on loan for the 2024-2025 season, a move intended to give him the platform he craves.

Whether that loan becomes a permanent escape route, or merely another pause before a fresh stand-off next summer, will depend on what Southampton decide to do with a winger who has now made his intentions unmistakably clear.
