Serie A Weekend Preview: Inter, Roma, Juventus, Lazio in Action

Inter, Roma, Juventus and Lazio Chase History on a Serie A Weekend Loaded with Subplots

Inter–Napoli: Goals, Records and a Streak on the Line

Inter walk into their clash with Napoli knowing a single goal could redraw the record books. They have scored in each of the last 16 Serie A meetings between the sides. No team has ever found the net in 17 straight league games against Napoli. One strike, and that mark becomes theirs alone.

The stakes stretch beyond trivia. Win, and Inter open a campaign with three victories from three for the first time since 2023-2024, underlining a title message before autumn has even settled in.

At the heart of it all stands Hakan Calhanoglu. The midfielder has already scored in both of Inter’s first two league fixtures. If he scores again on Saturday, he will become the first midfielder in the club’s history to find the net in each of the opening three matches of a Serie A season. For a player long valued for craft and rhythm, this is pure cutting edge.

Napoli arrive with their own thread of defiance. They are unbeaten in their last five league meetings with Inter, a run of one win and four draws. Stretch that to six, and they will match a sequence last seen between 2013 and 2015. Anything less and the balance of power tilts back towards a club that already dominates the historical ledger: Inter lead this fixture with 70 wins, 48 defeats and 42 draws, and their 229 goals against Napoli are bettered only by Juventus.

History is close enough to touch. The question is who grabs it first.

Roma–Atalanta: A Perfect Start Meets a True Bogey Team

Roma have opened the season like a team in a hurry. Two games, two 4-0 wins. Eight scored, none conceded. That start places them in a tiny elite: only three teams in Serie A history have hit at least eight goals without reply in their first two matches.

The lure of the next step is obvious. No side has begun a campaign with nine or more goals scored and none conceded across the opening three fixtures since Juventus in 1983-1984. Keep the run going this weekend and Roma will stand shoulder to shoulder with that benchmark.

Then comes the catch. The opponent is Atalanta. And Atalanta are Roma’s problem side.

The Bergamo club are unbeaten in the last eight league meetings between the teams, with six wins and two draws. That is the longest such streak in this fixture’s history. Even the Olimpico offers Roma little comfort: just one home win in their last 12 Serie A matches against Atalanta, with six draws and five defeats. Whenever these two meet, Roma’s form rarely travels with them.

Atalanta do not arrive just to spoil someone else’s party. A victory would give them three wins from three to start a Serie A season for the first time since 2020-2021. Up front, Donyell Malen is tearing through the division at rare speed: 19 goals in his first 20 Serie A appearances. Only Gunnar Nordahl and José Altafini have done better at that stage, both reaching 20 in 20.

Lazar Samardzic adds another layer. He has scored in each of his last six Serie A seasons. If he provides an assist against Roma, he will become the youngest player since 2004-2005 to both score and assist in six different campaigns.

Roma’s numbers say juggernaut. Atalanta’s history in this duel says something very different. One of those stories is about to crack.

Juventus–Milan: A Giant Fixture Strangled by Defences

Juventus against Milan should scream goals and drama. Lately, it has whispered. Four of the last five league meetings have ended 0-0, including the most recent two. Never before has this classic fixture produced three consecutive goalless draws. The last time these two clubs strung together a longer run of stalemates was back in 1973-1974, when they shared four in a row.

The defensive pattern leans heavily in one direction. Juventus have kept a clean sheet in each of their last six Serie A matches against Milan. That is the longest run the Rossoneri have ever gone without scoring against a single opponent in the competition.

Juve’s current season fits the theme. They opened with 1-0 and 2-0 wins, and another shutout would give them three clean sheets from three to start a campaign for only the second time in the last decade. Solid, controlled, unforgiving.

Milan see the same numbers and aim to flip them. They can still make it three straight wins to start a season for the fourth time in seven years, a sign of how consistently they have tried to launch campaigns at pace.

Nico Gonzalez will fancy his chances of breaking the deadlock. He has been directly involved in three goals across his last four home matches against Milan, scoring once and providing two assists. In a fixture suffocated by defences, one moment from a player like that can break the grip of history.

Lazio–Udinese: A Perfect Opening Under Examination

Two games, two wins, both by two goals, both with clean sheets. Lazio have never started a Serie A season like this. Not once.

Now they chase a third straight victory to open the campaign, something they have managed only twice before: in 1974-1975 and 2012-2013. Those seasons sit as markers of ambition; this one is trying to join them.

Udinese, though, have rarely played the role of obliging guest. They have avoided defeat in eight of their last 10 league meetings with Lazio. And they relish this trip: just one loss in their last 13 away matches against Lazio, with eight wins and four draws.

Lazio’s early-season authority meets a club that knows how to disrupt their rhythm in this stadium. One side is building a fresh identity; the other knows exactly how to unsettle it.

Genoa–Como: Dovikas Chasing Osimhen’s Shadow

Away from the headline fixtures, one streak quietly gathers weight. At Genoa against Como, Tsous Dovikas has the chance to match a mark set by one of Serie A’s recent stars.

The forward has scored in five consecutive away league matches. One more, and he will equal the run Victor Osimhen produced in 2023, before the former Napoli striker’s move to Galatasaray.

It is a different name, a different club, a different context. But the benchmark is clear. On a weekend dripping with history and records, Dovikas has his own line to chase.
