Sheffield United Sign Jordan Ayew for Survival Fight
Sheffield United have moved to add proven top-flight know-how to their survival fight, signing former Crystal Palace and Leicester City forward Jordan Ayew on a deal until the end of the season.
The 34-year-old Ghana international arrives as a free agent after leaving Leicester at the end of last season, in the wake of the Foxes’ relegation to League One. For a player who has lived almost exclusively in the Premier League and Championship for more than a decade, it is a swift route back into the spotlight.
Ayew first came to English football in 2015, swapping Lorient for Aston Villa. Since then he has become a familiar figure across the country’s top two divisions, a versatile forward trusted by a succession of managers for his work rate, tactical discipline and ability to fill multiple roles across the front line.
"We're talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game," the Sheffield United boss told the club’s website.
Ayew’s international pedigree underpins that assessment. He has 124 caps for Ghana and, as Wilder pointed out, “only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he's someone with real pedigree.”
That kind of résumé matters in a dressing room braced for a scrap. Ayew has operated off both flanks, through the middle and in deeper supporting roles. Wilder highlighted exactly that flexibility, stressing that the forward “has played all across the front positions during his career which gives us plenty of options.”
Ayew also showed last season that he can still handle the physical and mental demands of the Championship in what Wilder described as “difficult circumstances” at Leicester. Sheffield United will expect him to bring that same resilience to Bramall Lane.
An experienced leader, a proven operator in English football, and a short-term deal with clear upside. For a club hunting every edge it can find, Ayew’s arrival is a calculated bet that his know-how can tilt tight games their way before the season runs out.
