Song Yadong KOs Umar Nurmagomedov—Demands Title Shot
The bantamweight division has its chaos agent, and on Saturday in Shanghai his name was spelled out in capital letters: Song Yadong.
The Chinese contender flattened Umar Nurmagomedov with a brutal uppercut at 1:48 of Round 2 in the UFC Fight Night 286 main event, handing the highly touted Dagestani just the second loss of his career and then using the microphone to make his intentions clear — he wants a title shot.
For a round and a half, it looked like a typical Nurmagomedov performance was taking shape. Then the entire script burned.
A slow start, a violent end
Round 1 belonged to Umar on the cards and in the rhythm of the fight. He circled on the outside, measured Song’s power, and picked his moments. When Song threw a leg kick, Nurmagomedov timed a level change and drove him to the mat, briefly flirting with a guillotine before slipping free and settling in half guard.
From there, though, the action never really caught fire. Short punches from both men, boos from the Shanghai crowd, and a sense that the fight was still waiting to happen. MMA Junkie scored it 10-9 for Nurmagomedov, a round of control rather than damage.
Then came Round 2, and with it the storm.
Nurmagomedov opened with a jab and a leg kick, looking to re-establish his range. Song didn’t rush. He edged forward, checked distance, and chopped at the legs in return. When Umar shot for another takedown, Song stuffed it clean — the first crack in the Dagestani’s blueprint and a clear momentum shift.
Nurmagomedov answered with a neat combination. Song tagged him with a right hook. The tension spiked.
One exchange later, it was over.
Song uncorked a monstrous shot that shut Nurmagomedov off on impact, sending him crashing to the canvas in a highlight-reel knockout that silenced the skeptics and detonated the arena. No follow-up needed. Marc Goddard stepped in as Nurmagomedov lay out cold, the unbeaten aura around his surname suddenly gone.
With the win, Song moves to 24-9-1 in MMA and 13-4-1 in the UFC, a record that now includes one of the most significant knockouts of his career. Nurmagomedov falls to 20-2 overall, 8-2 in the UFC — still elite, but no longer untouchable.
Song didn’t waste the moment. Fresh off starching a member of the Nurmagomedov clan, he used his post-fight shine to call for a crack at bantamweight gold, staking his claim in one of the sport’s deepest divisions.
On a night full of finishes in Shanghai, Song Yadong’s uppercut was the one that will echo loudest in the title conversation.
