Southend United Sign Ryan Battrum on Loan for Promotion Push

Southend United have dipped into the Premier League ranks to sharpen their promotion push, bringing in West Ham United right-back Ryan Battrum on a month’s loan.

The 21-year-old, who can also slot into midfield, already knows what it feels like to face the Roots Hall crowd. He lined up against Southend in a pre-season friendly for West Ham back in July, a run-out that clearly left its mark.

So when the call came, his mind was made up quickly.

"When I heard about Southend's interest I was buzzing," Battrum told the club’s website. He has seen the scale of the club first-hand. "I've played against them and watched them a lot. Getting crowds of 10,000 in the National League is amazing."

For a side sitting fifth in the early National League table, and beaten just once in seven, this is not a panic signing. It is a statement of intent.

Depth and Competition

Kieron Dyer wants depth. More than that, he wants competition.

"It's always good to have two players for every position," the Southend boss said. "He gives Vontae Daley-Campbell great competition at right-back. He's got great energy, power, and strength, and he can also invert which we like our full-backs to do. He ticks all the boxes."

That last point matters. Dyer’s system leans heavily on full-backs who can step inside, overload midfield, and drive the team up the pitch. Battrum’s versatility fits that blueprint cleanly, offering Southend an extra gear on the right flank and an extra body in central areas when required.

The timing is no accident. The games are coming quickly, and Southend’s bright start needs reinforcing, not romanticising. A squad chasing promotion cannot be one injury away from a tactical rethink.

Battrum is available immediately and could make his debut in Tuesday’s home fixture against Tamworth, under the lights, in front of those same 10,000 he has already admired from the other side.
