Tom Aspinall's Heavyweight Title Dilemma: UFC's Next Move

Tom Aspinall’s UFC heavyweight title reign is drifting towards a crossroads, and Dana White knows it.

The British champion has not thrown a punch in anger since October 2025, when his first title defence against Ciryl Gane dissolved into chaos and confusion. What was supposed to be a statement night in the division instead ended in a no-contest and a medical nightmare.

Repeated eye pokes from Gane left Aspinall unable to continue. The damage went far beyond a routine injury check: he was later diagnosed with a rare eye condition and plagued by persistent double vision, before going under the knife in a bid to save both his career and his belt.

Now, as a full year out of competition looms, the UFC is preparing to make a call on his status as champion.

“We'll definitely be talking about that,” White said when asked whether Aspinall could be stripped of the title or encouraged to vacate it. The question is no longer hypothetical. The promotion has just watched one of its most decorated champions step aside.

Earlier this month, women’s flyweight great Valentina Shevchenko vacated her belt, worn down by persistent injuries and unwilling to freeze an entire division while she healed. That decision has become the reference point.

“Valentina doesn't want to tie up the division and I'm assuming Tom feels the same way,” White admitted. “I don't know personally where he is health-wise. We should clear that up soon.”

That uncertainty jars with the message Aspinall himself sent in June. Then, the 33-year-old insisted he had returned to full training and had a clear target in mind: a rematch with France’s Gane, potentially in September. It sounded like the champion was ready to reset the narrative, run it back, and finally put a definitive result on their rivalry.

The months since have only clouded the picture. Speculation flared at the end of August that Aspinall could even walk away from the UFC altogether. He moved quickly to shut that down, rejecting reports that he was preparing to leave the promotion.

So the belt sits in limbo. A champion on the shelf. A division waiting for clarity. And a president openly acknowledging that a decision on Tom Aspinall’s future can’t be kicked down the road much longer.
