Tommy Coyle Returns to the Ring for Charity Bout Against Derry Mathews

Former Commonwealth lightweight champion Tommy Coyle is stepping back into the ring after more than five years away from professional boxing. The Hull native will face his old rival Derry Mathews in a charity match aimed at raising funds for boxing clubs in both Hull and Liverpool.

The 37-year-old expressed mixed emotions about the upcoming bout, saying, "The response has been incredible. It's been humbling and I'm excited, but I am a little bit nervous as well." The fight is scheduled for 11 December at a location in Hull that has yet to be announced.

A Rivalry Rekindled

Coyle and Mathews first clashed in 2013 during their Commonwealth title fight at Craven Park, Hull, where Mathews claimed victory by knocking Coyle out in the 10th round. Reflecting on that moment, Coyle commented, "Who knows what's going to happen? In round 10, I got knocked out, so let's just see if I can turn back the clock. We're two old pros who are friends, and we're going to go at it and try to create some memories."

Personal Challenges and Motivation

This return to boxing comes as Coyle continues to cope with the loss of his father Chris, who passed away in 2022 and had been a significant figure throughout his career. "It will be the first fight my dad's not seen," he said. "It's sad, but I can't stop doing things just because he's not around anymore. He isn't coming back, and I've had to learn to come to terms with that. I've really struggled with him not being around; he was my best friend."

For Coyle, preparing for the fight offers a focus and purpose during difficult times. "For the next 12 weeks, it will give me something to focus on, something to chase, and something to occupy my mind. If I say I'm doing something, I always do it."

Coyle emphasized that boxing enthusiasts will benefit from the event alongside the clubs receiving the donations. This charity fight aims to bring attention and support to local boxing organizations in Hull and Liverpool.
