Virgil van Dijk's Strong Stance on Cody Gakpo Amid Transfer Talks

Virgil van Dijk doesn’t want to hear it. Not now. Not with the window about to slam shut and Liverpool still feeling their way through a new era.

Talk of Cody Gakpo to Manchester City is growing louder, the numbers are already out there – around £80 million – and negotiations are active. Tottenham Hotspur have made their move too, but City, according to The Athletic, sit where they usually do in these stories: at the front of the queue, as Gakpo’s preferred destination.

Van Dijk’s response? As blunt as it was predictable.

Asked after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham whether he wanted Gakpo to stay, the captain shot back: “What do you think? He’s a top-class player. I think we should keep our quality players.”

No spin. No diplomacy. Just a senior player drawing a clear line.

Van Dijk draws a line in the sand

The Dutch defender didn’t stop at the usual polite endorsement. He made it personal.

“We’ll see what the next few days bring,” he said. “I want him to stay not just because he’s a top-class player, but also because he’s a friend of mine. He’s very important to us.”

That “us” matters. Liverpool, in transition and reshaping under a new structure, can’t afford to casually hand a key attacker to the club that has dominated English football for the last decade. Not without a plan. Not without a replacement.

Inside Anfield, the stance is clear: Gakpo does not leave in the next 48 hours unless another winger walks through the door first. No safety net, no deal.

Barcola the next piece of the rebuild

That winger may already be en route. Bradley Barcola is undergoing his medical ahead of a move from Paris Saint-Germain, a signing Liverpool hope will inject fresh pace and unpredictability into their attack.

Van Dijk likes what he’s seen.

“He’s a good player, and he has pace,” the captain said. “I remember a goal he scored against Chelsea in the Champions League last season. If he comes here, he’ll be welcomed with open arms.”

It was more than a routine welcome message. For Van Dijk, Barcola’s imminent arrival is proof that Liverpool still carry weight in the market, even as the squad evolves and the club adapts to life after its last great cycle.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt that a club like Liverpool is a very attractive destination for very good players,” he added. “This is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We all know we’re going through something of a transitional phase. Either you want to be part of it or you don’t.”

That last line hangs in the air. It applies to potential signings. It also lands squarely in the middle of the Gakpo situation.

A window that will define the mood

Liverpool’s position is simple: add quality, don’t lose it. Especially not to City. Especially not now.

“Adding quality to the squad always makes a difference,” Van Dijk stressed. “We’ll see what the next few days bring. After Tuesday, we have to fight for everything without any regrets.”

That’s the clock he’s working to. Tuesday. After that, no more talk of exits, no more ifs and maybes. Just a squad locked in, chasing trophies, and a captain expecting everyone inside the dressing room to have made their choice.

Stay and fight for Liverpool’s next chapter. Or watch it unfold from somewhere else.
