Wolves' New-Look Squad: Promotion Prospects or Uncertainty?

Wolverhampton Wanderers head into the Championship season with a squad that looks big, bold and… unfamiliar.

That was the mood as BBC Radio WM’s Mike Taylor sat down with former Wolves striker David Kelly to pick through the club’s summer business. Numbers are not the problem at Molineux. Identity might be.

The recruitment drive has left Gary O’Neil with a sizeable group to manage, and on paper there is enough talent to talk about a promotion push. The issue, as Taylor and Kelly repeatedly circled back to, is whether there is enough hardened Championship know-how inside that dressing room to turn theory into points from August to May.

“This might be a promotion squad – the only thing that we can say for the moment, is it is not what we were anticipating,” Taylor said, capturing the sense of unease that sits alongside the optimism. Supporters expected one type of rebuild; the club has delivered another.

Taylor didn’t dress it up. “That doesn’t mean it will necessarily be bad. We’ll know that in a few weeks, but it is not what we were expecting. It just isn’t.”

It leaves Wolves in an intriguing place. The squad looks capable of challenging, yet unproven in the grind of a 46-game campaign. The margin between a genuine promotion charge and a season of frustration may come down to how quickly this new group learns the division’s unforgiving rhythm.
