Gordo’s verdict: a brain ahead of its years
Spain U21 coach David Gordo has watched this evolution with clear admiration, starting with the club that trusted him.
He made a point of crediting Barcelona and Flick for opening the door and leaving it there for Espart to walk through. Gordo loves seeing a teenager not just given minutes, but thriving in them.
“I like to see teams putting their faith in him. Of course, I’m blown away when I see Under-21 players performing at that level,” he said, via Mundo Deportivo, underlining how rare it is to see someone of Espart’s age already dictating games at senior level.
Gordo then went straight to the heart of what separates the youngster from his peers: how he sees the pitch.
“His greatest strength is that he reads the game, space and timing very well. And he can do so from any position. He’s decisive as a central midfielder and as a full-back.
“He’s very intelligent. He’s always one step ahead in every situation. In some ways, he reminds me of Pedri because of the way he understands the game. It’s as if time moves differently for him.”
That comparison is not thrown around lightly in Spanish football. To be mentioned in the same breath as Pedri says as much about Espart’s football IQ as any highlight reel could.
Flick’s new weapon
Inside Barcelona, Espart was already viewed as one to watch. This season, he has become one they can hardly do without.
Flick has leaned heavily on his versatility, using him primarily at left-back, where Espart has not just filled a gap but seized the role. In a squad containing Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde, the teenager has muscled his way to the front of the queue.
