Yves Bissouma's Move to Ajax: A Fresh Start in the Netherlands

Yves Bissouma is closing in on a move to Ajax, a fresh start in the Netherlands for a midfielder whose Premier League chapter ended quietly in June.

The former Tottenham and Brighton man, now 30, is in Amsterdam to finalise an initial deal running until the end of the season, with an option for a further 12 months. Ajax want experience and personality at the heart of their midfield. Bissouma offers both, if they can tap into the version that once dominated English midfields.

Released by Spurs at the end of his contract this summer, the Mali international has been without a club but not without suitors. Ajax have moved to bring him back into top-level football, betting that his blend of aggression, press resistance and ball-carrying can still tilt games in their favour in the Eredivisie and beyond.

Bissouma arrived at Tottenham in 2022 on the back of an outstanding spell at Brighton, where his ability to break up play and surge through the lines made him one of the most coveted midfielders in the league. He went on to make 111 appearances for Spurs, a solid tally that underlines how often managers turned to him, even as his form fluctuated.

His time in north London, though, never quite matched the expectation that followed his high-profile move. The turning point came in August 2025, when then Spurs manager Thomas Frank left him out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup against Paris St-Germain, citing persistent lateness. It was a public marker, a moment that hinted at frayed trust behind the scenes.

Now comes the reset.

Ajax, a club built on structure and discipline but always willing to give talent a second chance, are offering Bissouma a short-term platform with a possible extra year attached. For the player, it is an opportunity to reassert himself in a league that should suit his technical ability and allow him more touches, more responsibility, more rhythm.

For Ajax, it is a calculated gamble on a midfielder who has already proved he can handle the demands of elite competition. For Bissouma, it may be the last big move that defines whether he is remembered as a fleeting Premier League talent or a leader in one of Europe’s great football cities.
