Fresh from a ruthless run in New York, where the 27-year-old tore through the draw and dismantled two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the US Open final, Rybakina has chosen recovery over another charge in national colours. The decision comes at the end of a month that pushed her body to its limit.

That US Open victory delivered her third Grand Slam crown, confirming a rise that has felt inevitable for some time. She now owns majors on three different surfaces: Wimbledon in 2022, the Australian Open earlier this year, and now Flushing Meadows. The ranking system finally caught up with the reality on court.

“I have to announce that I won't be able to participate in Billie Jean King Cup this year,” Rybakina wrote on Instagram, confirming what Kazakhstan’s camp will have feared. “Am very sad to miss Shenzhen, such a nice place with an amazing crowd. Last month has been tough for my body and I will need to recover and be at my best to compete again. I wish girls good luck.”

For Kazakhstan, it is a brutal blow. The Finals, staged in Shenzhen from September 22 to 27, had offered a grand stage for the newly crowned No. 1 to front a quarter-final showdown with Spain on September 23. Instead, the team must confront a tricky tie without the player who has become their standard-bearer on the global stage.

The tournament itself has a clear benchmark. Italy arrive as two-time defending champions, a reminder of what continuity and depth can deliver in this format. Kazakhstan, still building their reputation among the elite nations, now face the challenge of proving they are more than a one-star story.
