Emma Navarro Dominates Muchova to Reach U.S. Open Round of 16

NEW YORK – Under the late-summer glare in Queens, Emma Navarro didn’t just ride the American wave at the U.S. Open. She drove it.

The 26th seed delivered a composed, ruthless performance on Friday, knocking out Czech seventh seed Karolina Muchova 6-3 7-5 to claim her third win of the season over a top-10 opponent and book her place in the round of 16.

Muchova, the Wimbledon finalist in July and one of the most gifted all-court players on tour, came in short of matches after minor surgery. Navarro showed her no sympathy.

From the baseline, the American set the terms. She absorbed Muchova’s heavy strikes, redirected pace, and refused to be bullied out of position. The early exchanges were tight, both players trading breaks, but the Czech’s game frayed first. Serving at 3-5 in the opening set, Muchova sprayed a forehand wide to surrender her serve again, closing a patchy set in which she racked up 22 unforced errors and never truly settled into a rhythm.

Navarro sensed the opening and stepped in.

The second set turned into the contest everyone had expected. Muchova finally began to find the lines, mixing in variety, dragging Navarro forward and wide. The American held firm. They traded breaks twice, the match tugging back and forth as the tension climbed.

At 5-5, Navarro tightened the screws. Her return game, sharp all afternoon, locked onto Muchova’s serve in the 11th game. On her third break-point chance of the game, she cracked through, breaking again to stand one game from the biggest win of her fortnight.

Serving for the match, there was no trace of panic. Navarro stayed on the front foot, finishing the contest on her terms – a searing forehand winner that tore through Muchova’s defences and into the corner. She froze for a beat, then thrust both fists into the air, soaking in the roar from a crowd that has adopted her as one of its own.

Navarro has become a darling of the outer courts in New York, and she revealed she has played her last six matches here on the Grandstand. The intimacy suits her. So does the stage.

Her run continues in the last 16, where she will face either Elina Svitolina or Anna Kalinskaya. With compatriots Taylor Townsend and Jessica Pegula already through and Madison Keys and Coco Gauff still to play their third-round matches, Navarro’s win deepened the American imprint on the second week.

She knew it would be tough. She made it look anything but.
