Meet Iva Jovic: America’s Emerging Tennis Talent

Iva Jovic, hailing from Torrance, California, is making waves as the fourth highest ranked American woman on the WTA Tour, trailing only behind Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Amanda Anisimova. At just 18 years old, she holds the 13th spot in the live WTA rankings.

Her skill set and maturity on court seem beyond her years, placing her among a select group of American women who are considered strong contenders for their first Grand Slam title soon.

A Competitive Spirit Since Childhood

Before dedicating herself to tennis, Iva was highly competitive in other sports like soccer and swimming. Tennis emerged as her passion during the COVID-19 pandemic, largely thanks to her older sister, Mia, who was her initial practice partner. Their matches were intense and helped sharpen Iva’s game.

Family Roots and Influences

Iva’s parents, Bojan and Jelena, moved to the United States as adults—Bojan from Serbia and Jelena from Croatia. The sisters spent many summers growing up with their paternal grandparents in Serbia and are fluent in Serbian.

The connection to Serbian tennis is strong. Novak Djokovic, arguably the most famous Serbian player, has become a supporter of Iva, sending her encouraging messages and wishing her success on tour.

Bojan recalls entering Iva in an Under-18 tournament when she was only 13. She shocked everyone by winning against older, more seasoned competitors. But her parents value her character even more than her victories. They admire how she handles pressure, respects the sport, opponents, and fans.

Recent Success and Upcoming Challenges

Iva recently clinched her second consecutive WTA 500 title at the Guadalajara Open. Her next appearance will be at the WTA 1000 China Open starting September 30.
