Jessica Pegula Withdraws from Singapore WTA 500

Jessica Pegula’s North American hard-court surge has come at a price. The world No. 3 has withdrawn from next week’s WTA 500 event in Singapore, citing the physical toll of a relentless stretch that ended with another deep run at the U.S. Open.

“After a long and physically demanding few weeks at the U.S. Open, I'm just not quite ready to get back on court and compete at the level I expect from myself,” the American wrote on social media this week, drawing a firm line under any hopes of a quick return.

It is hardly a surprise. Pegula has been everywhere and winning almost everything. She climbed to a career-high No. 3 in the WTA rankings on the back of a 15-4 record during the American hard-court swing, reaching finals in Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati before marching into the semifinals in New York for the second straight year. Her 50 match wins this season lead the entire WTA Tour.

That kind of schedule leaves marks. Singapore was supposed to be the next stop, a high-profile WTA 500 where Pegula would have been the top seed and marquee attraction. Instead, the draw now reshapes around one of the sport’s rising forces.

With Pegula out, No. 5-ranked Mirra Andreeva inherits top-seed status for a tournament that suddenly feels wide open. The 28-player field still has plenty of bite, with top-20 names Amanda Anisimova and Alexandra Eala adding heft to a line-up that starts play on Monday.

Singapore loses its headline act, but the story of Pegula’s season doesn’t slow. She has banked wins, ranking points and credibility as one of the tour’s standard-bearers. The question now is not whether she can compete at the top, but how carefully she manages the grind from here to the finish line of the season.
