Kostyuk Advances to Guadalajara Quarters Without Playing
Marta Kostyuk is into the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Open without having played a single point. Not a serve. Not a rally.
The top seed’s route has opened up in surreal fashion in Mexico. She skipped the first round with a bye, as expected for the tournament’s leading name. Then Wednesday brought another twist: a walkover in round two after Taylor Townsend withdrew due to illness.
So the world number 10 finds herself in the last eight with a spotless box score and a racket yet to be tested.
Upcoming Match
That changes now.
Kostyuk is scheduled to finally launch her campaign against eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova, who survived a bruising three-set battle to get there. The Russian edged past Kayla Day 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 7-6 (7-5), a match that swung wildly before Samsonova held her nerve in both tiebreaks.
Breakout Season
For Kostyuk, Guadalajara is another stop in what has already become a breakout season at the very top level. She captured her first WTA 1000 title in Madrid in May, a statement week that announced her as a genuine force on tour. She backed it up on the biggest stages, reaching the semi-finals at both the French Open and Wimbledon.
Hard courts have not slowed her either. Her most recent outing came at the US Open, where she fell in the last 16 to sixth seed Linda Noskova.
Now she walks into the quarter-finals fresh, rested, and carrying the expectations of a top seed. The question in Guadalajara is simple: does that unspent energy turn into an advantage, or will Samsonova’s battle-hardened rhythm hit the court first?
