Novak Djokovic Shares Fitness Update Ahead of China Open Return

Novak Djokovic says he is "feeling good" as he gears up for his first match at the China Open, marking his return to competition after a surprising early loss at the US Open.

The six-time Beijing champion, seeded sixth, will face Nuno Borges in the opening round of the ATP 500 event. This tournament runs alongside the Japan Open and draws top players like Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Post-US Open Fitness and Outlook

After his shock first-round defeat by Mariano Navone at the US Open, where Djokovic also played mixed doubles with WTA star Aryna Sabalenka, the 24-time Grand Slam winner provided an update on his physical condition.

"Yeah, feeling good so far. Let’s see. Obviously it’s completely different when you’re playing an official match compared to practice sets or sessions. But so far so good," Djokovic said during a media session in Beijing.

He added that returning to China has lifted his spirits: "My record speaks for itself on Chinese soil. Knowing that brings this dimension of confidence I really need. Overall it’s been really good with my body and how I’m playing."

Impressive China Open Record and Return After 11 Years

Djokovic’s history in Beijing is remarkable—he holds a flawless 29-0 record and has claimed the title six times. Although he hasn’t competed there since 2015, he expressed genuine happiness about coming back.

"At this stage of my career, it’s about playing tournaments I enjoy, where I’ve had success and feel welcomed by the fans in a positive way," Djokovic explained. "The history of my results on Chinese soil has been incredible. I haven’t played here in 11 years. Previously, my schedule only allowed Shanghai, but this year Beijing was a priority. I’m really glad to be here."

Current Form and Upcoming Match

The former world number one improved his ATP ranking to 11th before the tournament, holding a 14-7 win-loss record in 2026. He has faced Borges once before in the 2025 Athens quarterfinals, winning that encounter on his way to the title.
