Antonelli Leads F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Amidst High Stakes

Round 15 of the 2026 Formula 1 season hits the streets of Baku from 24-26 September, with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix offering long straights, unforgiving walls and a championship picture increasingly painted in Mercedes silver.

Kimi Antonelli arrives with an 81-point cushion after winning the inaugural Madring Spanish Grand Prix, a result that felt bigger than a simple race victory. It was the kind of afternoon where title campaigns harden: composed under pressure, ruthless when it mattered, and utterly unforgiving once he had clear air.

Norris Stung by VSC, Verstappen Denied, Antonelli Cashes In

Madring had threatened to be Lando Norris’ stage. A blistering qualifying lap put the McLaren driver on pole and, for a while, he looked ready to convert it into a statement win.

Then came the virtual safety car.

Timing is everything in modern Formula 1, and Norris was on the wrong side of it. The shuffle in strategy cost him the lead and opened the door for Antonelli, who didn’t hesitate. Norris fought back to salvage third, but the damage to his Sunday – and to his faint title hopes – was done.

Max Verstappen, meanwhile, had to play a different game. Forced to cede position to Lewis Hamilton early in the race, the Red Bull driver lost critical momentum just as the front of the field was taking shape. That concession proved decisive. Antonelli exploited the situation, controlled the pace, and Verstappen was left to chase a win that never quite came within reach, crossing the line in second.

The net result: another step towards the crown for Antonelli, another reminder for Norris and Verstappen that the margins at the top are brutally thin.

Baku Beckons: Walls, Wind and a 51-Lap Test

Now the whole travelling circus heads to Baku, a street circuit that punishes hesitation and rewards bravery. The 51-lap race on Sunday will start at 12:00 BST, with the cars hurtling down one of the longest straights on the calendar before threading through the tight castle section where a single mistake can end a weekend.

Mercedes will want to tighten their grip on both championships. Red Bull and McLaren, stung by what slipped away in Spain, know Baku’s chaos can turn a season on its head in a single safety car period or a mistimed pit stop.
