F1 Reduces Race Distance and Time Limits for 2027

Formula 1 will look and feel a little shorter from 2027 – but the sport insists the show should run more smoothly than ever.

The Formula 1 Commission has approved a cut in official race distance from 305 kilometres to 290 kilometres, a reduction of roughly two to three laps depending on the circuit. The decision was finalised in London and tied directly to the next overhaul of power unit regulations.

“In line with the refinements to the power unit regulations to be introduced in 2027 on fuel flow, a reduction in the total race distance from 305km to 290km was approved, corresponding to a reduction of two or three laps,” read a statement after the meeting.

The new engine framework will lean more heavily on increased combustion power and less on hybrid electrical output. With that shift, F1 has chosen to trim the distance rather than stretch the limits of fuel flow and energy deployment over the traditional 305km.

There is another key change, and this one targets the sport’s most frustrating afternoons.

The strict three-hour overall event cap has been scrapped. Rain delays, red flags, lengthy barrier repairs – the clock will no longer strangle a Grand Prix in quite the same way. The familiar two-hour limit of active racing remains in place, but race control and organisers will now have extra room to complete the full, newly reduced distance when chaos breaks out.

The aim is simple: keep fans in the grandstands and at home watching a proper race, not a truncated sprint to beat an arbitrary time limit.

Practice sessions are also set to gain extra elasticity. When stoppages bite into running on Fridays and Saturdays, sessions will be able to stretch to claw back some of the lost track time, giving teams and drivers more chance to prepare and spectators more to watch.

Shorter races on paper, more flexibility in reality. From 2027, Formula 1 is betting that a leaner distance and looser timing rules will deliver a cleaner, more complete spectacle when the weather turns ugly or the red flags fly.
