Gasly Loses Monaco Podium as McLaren Wins Appeal

What looked like a hard-fought podium for Pierre Gasly in Monaco has vanished months later in a meeting room rather than at a braking point.

McLaren have won their appeal against the result of the Monaco Grand Prix, overturning a controversial series of pit-lane speeding penalties that reshapes the final order and strips Gasly of third place.

The Frenchman, who crossed the line third on the road on 7 June and later inherited the podium after an Alpine appeal, is pushed back down to seventh – the position he originally received in the official classification. Alpine’s successful challenge at the time had erased two five-second penalties, but that ruling has now been reversed.

The big winners are Red Bull and McLaren.

Isack Hadjar is reinstated to third, reclaiming what he and his team always felt was rightfully his. Oscar Piastri is promoted to fourth, another solid result in a season where the Australian has quietly built a reputation for relentless consistency behind McLaren’s headline act, Lando Norris.

At the heart of the dispute sits a basic but costly error: Formula 1 had measured the length of the pit lane incorrectly in Monaco. With the distance wrong, the system calculated average speeds that appeared too high and triggered multiple speeding penalties that should never have existed.

Those penalties distorted the race, then the standings, and finally the story of the podium. Once the measurement mistake came to light and McLaren pushed their case, the dominoes started to fall.

For Gasly and Alpine, the reversal stings. The Monaco podium, with its history and claustrophobic glamour, is one of the sport’s most coveted pieces of silverware. Losing it months after the champagne has dried is a brutal twist, even if the car’s true finishing position never changes.

For Hadjar, it is a different kind of memory. No podium ceremony, no national anthem, but the record books will show a Red Bull on the rostrum and a young driver’s career marked by a Monaco third place that arrived by paperwork rather than by podium steps.

The race is long finished. The arguments, clearly, were not.
