Lewis Hamilton's Dramatic Lap with a Wounded Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton nursed a wounded Ferrari around a full lap after a dramatic off at the final corner, defying increasingly urgent radio calls to park the car.

The sequence began with race engineer Carlo Santi’s calm instruction turning quickly into concern.

“Stop in the safest place possible,” came the first message.

“If I can make it back, I will. If not, I will do it safely,” Hamilton replied, determined to drag the car home.

Moments later, the situation worsened.

“We have a puncture on the front right. Stop the car,” Santi pressed, his tone tightening.

“I can see that, I can see that,” Hamilton shot back, eyes clearly on more than just the dashboard warnings.

He had already locked up and gone straight on into the Tecpro barrier at the last corner, crunching into the protection and damaging at least the front wing and both front tyres. The impact wasn’t heavy enough to end his session on the spot, but it left the Ferrari limping and unstable.

Hamilton still managed to get the car going again, choosing to attempt the long way round rather than pull over on the spot, even as the team urged him to abandon the lap. A full tour of the circuit on a punctured front-right and a battered front end is no gentle cruise; every braking zone becomes a risk, every corner a question.

Earlier, the tone of Ferrari’s day had been very different. The red cars had rolled out on soft tyres and attacked immediately, wasting no time easing into the session. Hamilton’s first proper effort of the day underlined that intent: a 1m34.284s, just under half a second shy of his best from Friday. It was a statement lap, aggressive and sharp, suggesting there was still more to come.

Charles Leclerc slotted in just behind, only 0.149s slower, backing up Ferrari’s pace with a tidy run of his own. The pairing on softs looked like a team ready to lean on its package and take risks.

Hamilton’s trip into the Tecpro showed exactly where that fine line sits. One moment, Ferrari were chasing fractions; the next, their lead car was crawling around on a puncture, its front wing wounded, its driver arguing for one more lap of survival.
