Piastri Penalized for Impeding Lawson at Monza Qualifying

Piastri stripped of Monza third after impeding Lawson in qualifying shuffle

Oscar Piastri’s sparkling qualifying at Monza has taken a heavy hit, with the McLaren driver stripped of third on the grid for the Italian Grand Prix after stewards ruled he impeded Liam Lawson.

What looked like a statement Saturday from the Australian has turned into a costly misstep in the most crowded part of the lap.

A messy moment at the first chicane

The incident came late in Q2, just as the session was building to its usual Monza slipstream crescendo.

Piastri rolled out of the pit lane on an out-lap, rejoining the track as the two Red Bull cars of Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson began their final flying runs. The pair were out of sync with the rest of the field, locked into a deliberate tow routine: Lawson had helped Verstappen earlier, and now Verstappen was trying to drag Lawson into Q3.

Piastri had been warned over the radio that the Red Bulls were approaching. What he did not know, he later told the stewards, was that they were already on push laps.

He moved aside for Verstappen and cleared the Dutchman, but the timing left him stranded in the worst possible place. As he turned into the first chicane, Lawson arrived on his own hot lap and ran straight into the dirty air and compromised line of the McLaren. The New Zealander lost time through the corner and never got it back.

That single baulk effectively killed Lawson’s shot at Q3.

Stewards accept the dilemma, still punish the block

Piastri was summoned after qualifying to explain the sequence. He argued that once he had committed to the braking zone and line, he had nowhere to go but through the chicane, even as he tried to minimise the obstruction.

The stewards agreed that he had been placed in a “tricky” situation, boxed in by timing and track position. They also accepted that the impeding was inadvertent.

It did not save him.

In a statement, the FIA noted that with the information Piastri had at the time and where he was on the circuit, he “had, at this stage, no other options available and hence, inadvertently, and also unnecessarily, impeded Car 30.” The standard sanction followed: a three-place grid drop for blocking a rival.

The penalty knocks Piastri from third to sixth on Sunday’s grid.

Grid shake-up behind the front row

That decision triggers an immediate reshuffle behind the front row of Pierre Gasly and George Russell.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is promoted to third, with Lewis Hamilton alongside him on the second row. Piastri now finds himself starting from sixth, a very different prospect into Monza’s tight Turn 1, where track position and clear air are priceless.

For Lawson, the damage was already done. Missing out on Q3 meant Red Bull’s carefully planned slipstream strategy collapsed at the final hurdle.

With Lawson out, Verstappen had to hunt for a tow alone in Q3, deprived of the support role his team had mapped out for him. That support had looked especially valuable given the engine change penalty that will drop Verstappen to the back of the grid for Sunday’s race.

One misjudged out-lap, one blocked corner, and the whole qualifying picture at Monza has been nudged off its axis.
