Bengal Wicketkeeper Abishek Porel Granted Bail After Rape Allegations
Abishek Porel, the Bengal wicketkeeper-batter who features for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, has been granted bail by a Chinsurah court after spending over a month in judicial custody in connection with an alleged rape and criminal intimidation case.
The order, reported by ABP Ananda and corroborated by multiple outlets, comes 36 days after Porel was arrested on August 11, following a complaint lodged by a medical student from Karnataka.
Relationship dispute at the heart of the case
The complainant told police she had been in a relationship with Porel for around three-and-a-half years and that the two had discussed marriage. She also alleged the pair had travelled abroad together during this period.
Her accusation centres on the claim that Porel later denied the relationship, which she says pushed her to approach the authorities. She filed her complaint at Mogra police station on June 23.
She further referred to an earlier dispute between them about one-and-a-half years ago, which, according to her account, had led to police intervention. No formal case was registered at that time.
Based on her complaint, police registered a case under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 311 and 318 and other provisions of the BNS, as well as Sections 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act. The proceedings also included allegations of criminal intimidation and other offences alongside the rape allegation.
The matter then escalated to the Calcutta High Court, which directed police to arrest Porel and ordered the seizure of his electronic devices amid concerns over possible dissemination of photographs of the complainant.
From arrest to bail
Porel was produced before the Chinsurah court soon after his arrest. His initial plea for bail was rejected and he was sent to judicial custody.
That stance has now shifted. After 36 days in jail, the 23-year-old has secured bail, according to the ABP Ananda report. Details of the bail conditions have not been made public in the reports cited.
Porel has previously denied the allegations.
Rising career under a cloud
The legal case has erupted at a time when Porel’s cricket career has been on an upward curve.
The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter joined Delhi Capitals in 2023 and made his IPL debut that season. In the 2026 campaign, he scored 108 runs in four innings for the franchise, hinting at a growing role in their batting plans.
Across his T20 career, he has played 35 games, scoring 769 runs at an average of 25.63 and a strike rate of 145.37, with four half-centuries to his name.
In domestic cricket, Porel broke into the Bengal first-class side in the 2021-22 season and quickly established himself as a regular. He has represented Bengal in 32 first-class matches and 23 List A games, emerging as one of the more promising young keepers on the Indian circuit.
With bail now granted, his immediate future shifts from a jail cell back to the courtroom and, potentially, the cricket field. How those two worlds collide from here will define not just his season, but perhaps his career.
