Auqib Nabi Joins Surrey for County Championship Boost

Surrey have moved to bolster their seam attack for the decisive stretch of the County Championship, snapping up in-form Indian fast bowler Auqib Nabi on a short-term deal.

The 29-year-old will be available for Surrey’s next three Championship fixtures, against Yorkshire, Sussex and Glamorgan, as the club braces for a punishing run of six red-ball games in six weeks.

“With the exceptionally challenging schedule of six games in six weeks, with minimal recovery between matches along with international fixtures, we’ve had to add options to our bowling stocks for the County Championship run in,” Stewart said. “We look forward to welcoming Auqib to the group this week.”

Surrey turn to a bowler in full flow. Nabi arrives in England off the back of a career-defining domestic season in India, where he spearheaded Jammu and Kashmir’s fairytale Ranji Trophy triumph. His 60 wickets in the campaign not only powered the team to their maiden title but also earned him the player of the tournament award, marking him out as one of the most dangerous red-ball quicks on the circuit.

That surge of form opened doors quickly. Nabi landed a lucrative IPL contract with Delhi Capitals for the 2026 season and featured in five matches, a significant step up in profile for a bowler who has spent much of his career away from the spotlight.

His progress has not gone unnoticed at national level either. Nabi turned out for India A and was drafted into the senior Test squad in Sri Lanka as cover for Jasprit Bumrah. He did not debut, but the call-up underlined how firmly he now sits on the radar of India’s selectors.

For Nabi, the Surrey deal is another stage in an accelerating journey.

“It’s an honour to join Surrey, one of the best Clubs in England,” he said. “I’m looking forward to learning from the group and helping them for the next three matches.”

Surrey, chasing another strong Championship finish, now hand the new ball to a bowler who has spent the last few months thriving under pressure. How quickly Nabi can translate his Ranji dominance to English conditions will go a long way to deciding whether this short-term gamble becomes a longer-term conversation.
