Barnsley Sign Connor O'Riordan on Loan from Blackburn

Barnsley have moved to strengthen their back line with the season-long loan signing of Blackburn Rovers defender Connor O'Riordan, securing an option to make the deal permanent next summer.

The 22-year-old, capped by Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level, arrives at Oakwell with fresh experience of the division. He spent the first half of last season in League One with Doncaster, where he adjusted quickly to the tempo and physical edge of the third tier.

Blackburn recalled him in January, keen to take a closer look. O'Riordan went on to make six appearances in all competitions for the Championship side, a small but important step in his development as he edged closer to regular second-tier football.

Now comes the next test.

Barnsley, pushing to refine a squad capable of handling the grind of a long League One campaign, have identified the young centre-back as a player who can grow with them. The loan structure, with that built-in option to buy, underlines their belief that this is more than a short-term patch.

O'Riordan could be thrown straight into the action. His Tykes debut may come as soon as Saturday, away at Leyton Orient, where the pace of the game and the demands of the occasion will offer an immediate measure of how quickly he can settle into red.
