Glamorgan Signs Welsh Wicketkeeper-Batter Seren Smale
Glamorgan have brought one of their own home.
The Welsh county have completed the signing of Wrexham-born wicketkeeper‑batter Seren Smale from Lancashire, a move that lands them a rising international talent just as they build towards Tier One status in 2027.
For Smale, it is more than a transfer. It is a return.
“Being Welsh and being able to represent Glamorgan professionally brings me so much excitement,” the 21-year-old said. “It’s where I started my cricket journey and I can’t wait to see what this next chapter brings.”
A Welsh international coming of age
Smale already owns a serious cricketing CV for someone barely into her twenties. She has played two T20 internationals for England and featured for the national Under‑19s at the 2022 ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup, experience that has hardened her game against elite opposition.
Her path began at Buckley Cricket Club, the kind of grassroots setting where county dreams often stay just that. Smale turned them into something more, breaking through with Thunder and becoming a regular between 2021 and 2024, while also picking up exposure in The Hundred and on the international stage.
Now that journey loops back to Wales, at a time when Glamorgan are reshaping the landscape for women’s cricket in the country.
Glamorgan’s statement of intent
Glamorgan’s head of women and girls cricket, Aimee Rees, made no attempt to hide how important this deal is to the club’s long-term plans.
“We’re absolutely delighted to have Seren join Glamorgan for the next three years,” Rees said. “She is incredibly proud to be Welsh, and she was someone we identified early as a key target for our recruitment strategy.”
This is not a token signing. It is a cornerstone.
Rees highlighted exactly why: “She brings real quality and valuable experience to our squad, with experience in The Hundred and at international level. We know she will make a big impact, and we’re excited to see her continue to develop and perform on the biggest stages in a Glamorgan shirt.”
Smale will link up with her new teammates later this year for pre‑season, bedding in ahead of the 2027 campaign when Glamorgan step into the Tier One arena.
Building a professional core
Smale’s arrival drops into a wider pattern. Glamorgan are not just signing players; they are building a professional backbone.
Batter Bethan Gammon has already joined the women’s professional ranks, the 25-year-old from Pontypridd signing alongside all‑rounder Bethan Ellis and batter/wicketkeeper Abbey Freeborn, both of whom had been on loan from Warwickshire over the last two seasons.
Those three, together with captain Lauren Parfitt, form Glamorgan’s first group of full‑time female players. Smale now strengthens that core, adding international polish to a squad that suddenly looks built for the future rather than simply fighting for relevance.
The pieces are in place. The question now is how far this new-look Glamorgan can push Welsh women’s cricket once Tier One status finally arrives.
