Gloucestershire Signs Young Fast Bowler Che Simmons on Loan
Gloucestershire have moved early to secure one of county cricket’s most talked-about young quicks, bringing in fast bowler Che Simmons on loan from Warwickshire for the rest of the season ahead of a permanent switch in 2027.
The 22-year-old will be available for Gloucestershire’s remaining three County Championship fixtures and has already committed to a two-year deal starting next summer, a clear sign this is no short-term patch-up but a long-term bet on raw pace and potential.
Simmons broke into Warwickshire’s Championship side in 2024, but opportunities have been scarce, with only three first-class appearances to his name. For a bowler of his age, that sort of stop-start exposure can stall momentum. He has decided he has waited long enough.
He admitted that the chance to play regular first-team cricket was a “big factor” in his decision to move, a blunt and telling line from a player who wants overs, not promises.
Gloucestershire, rebuilding and retooling their attack, see exactly that kind of hunger as an asset. Director of cricket Jon Lewis did not hide his enthusiasm, calling Simmons “a hugely talented young cricketer with a very high ceiling” and highlighting the volume of work he has already banked in Warwickshire’s second team as proof of his readiness.
For Lewis, this is the moment to push Simmons out of the shadows and into the Championship spotlight, to “take the next step and showcase his abilities at first-team level”.
The move gives Gloucestershire an immediate injection of pace for the run-in and a foundation piece for the seasons to come. For Simmons, it offers what every young fast bowler craves: a new ball, a long spell, and the stage to show he belongs.
