India–Afghanistan T20I Match Confirmed Despite BRICS Concerns
For a few tense hours, Sunday’s first T20 International between India and Afghanistan in New Delhi teetered on the brink of a postponement. Politics, security and cricket collided around the BRICS Summit in the Capital, and the marquee clash at Arun Jaitley Stadium briefly looked like collateral damage.
Delhi Police, grappling with an already heavy security load for the high-profile summit, raised concerns about managing another major event on the same day. The request went in: could the game be pushed back by 24 hours?
By Thursday night, the answer was clear. The cricket stays.
The Delhi District Cricket Association stepped in to shut down the uncertainty, confirming that the opening T20I will go ahead as planned on Sunday, 13 September.
“India–Afghanistan 1st T20I on 13 September at Arun Jaitley Stadium will go ahead as scheduled. Following a meeting with Delhi Traffic Police, DDCA has been assured of all necessary support and arrangements,” the DDCA announced in a social media post.
That meeting proved decisive. With traffic and security arrangements ironed out, the immediate cloud over the fixture lifted. Concerns around crowd movement, VIP convoys and lockdown zones around the city had threatened to turn a routine international into a logistical headache.
Instead, the focus can return to the cricket.
Afghanistan’s visit carries its own significance, and the first T20I now stands untouched on the calendar, set against the backdrop of one of the busiest weekends New Delhi will see this year. The roads may be restricted, the security cordons tight, but the lights at Arun Jaitley Stadium will be on and the game will start on time.
