India Announces Strong Squad for Afghanistan T20I Series
India have signalled their intent for the Afghanistan T20I series with a near full-strength squad and a clear shift back towards their established core.
Bumrah returns, Iyer takes charge
Shreyas Iyer will lead the side for the three-match series in New Delhi, but the headline is unmistakable: Jasprit Bumrah is back in India’s T20 colours for the first time since the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand in March. For a format that hinges on control at the death and shock value with the new ball, his inclusion instantly hardens India’s edge.
The leadership group has a familiar feel. Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain, underlining his growing stature in the shortest format, while the rest of the squad leans heavily on players who have already been in and around recent white-ball tours.
Samson recalled, Zimbabwe contingent cut
Behind the stumps, Sanju Samson returns to the T20I set-up after missing the Zimbabwe series. He comes back not as a fringe option but as one of two designated wicketkeepers, alongside Ishan Kishan. That immediately tightens competition for the gloves and for a middle-order slot.
Samson is one of eight changes from the Zimbabwe trip. Rinku Singh, Suryansh Shedge, Harsh Dubey, Prabhsimran Singh, Prince Yadav, Yash Thakur, Mayank Yadav and Ashok Sharma all drop out as the experimentation of that tour gives way to a more hardened group.
The message is blunt: the auditions are over, at least for now.
Bowling core restored, fitness clouds linger
The attack looks far closer to India’s first-choice structure. The selectors have gone back to the template used on the England tour, restoring proven options and trimming some of the newer faces.
Shedge, Prince and Prasidh, who were part of that England trip, do not make the cut this time. Instead, Bumrah anchors a pace unit that includes Arshdeep Singh and the returning mystery of Varun Chakaravarthy. Harshit Rana has also been named, but his availability, like Bumrah’s workload, will be subject to fitness clearance.
They are not alone on that watchlist. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar have both been included with the caveat that their participation depends on medical green lights. If they are cleared, India gain a pair of flexible all-round options; if not, the balance of the XI shifts again.
New Delhi hosts a near full-strength India
All three T20Is will be played in New Delhi, on September 13, 15 and 17, giving India a compact home block to fine-tune combinations and roles.
For Iyer, it is a chance to stamp authority as captain with a strong squad at his disposal. For Bumrah, it is the start of another chapter in a format that so often bends to his will. And for the fringe names who survived the cut, it may be one of the last clear windows to lock down a spot before the next wave of selection debates begins.
