India Clinches Men's Cricket Gold at 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou

India, led by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, claimed the gold medal in men's cricket at the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou. The team entered the competition at the quarterfinal stage and showed strong performances throughout the knockout rounds.

Path to Victory

In the quarterfinals, India comfortably defeated Nepal by 23 runs, securing their spot in the semifinals. They continued their dominant run by dismantling Bangladesh in the semifinals.

The final against Afghanistan, however, was cut short due to persistent rain. After choosing to field first, India restricted Afghanistan to 112 for 5 in 18.2 overs before play was abandoned. With no further play possible, the gold medal was awarded to India based on the tournament's seeding rule, as they were the higher-ranked team prior to the final.

Afghanistan, making their third consecutive men's cricket final appearance at the Asian Games, settled for silver again, while Bangladesh earned the bronze medal.

In a rain-shortened five-over game, India managed only 32 runs, with Shreyas Iyer contributing 16 runs before Japan's bowlers tightened their grip. India narrowly escaped an upset, winning by just two runs, signaling that back-to-back gold medals may not come easily.
