Kent Faces Setback as Hasan Mahmud Returns to Bangladesh
Kent’s promotion push has taken a late blow. Their spearhead overseas quick, Hasan Mahmud, is heading home just as the season reaches its sharp end.
The 26-year-old fast-medium, who has impressed across formats with 30 wickets in seven outings in the County Championship and T20 Blast, has been recalled by Bangladesh. He will link up with the national side to prepare for a busy run of series against Afghanistan, West Indies and South Africa.
For Kent, the timing is brutal.
They sit third in Division Two, only two points behind second-placed Northamptonshire, and with the finish line in sight. Two home fixtures remain, both against the division’s bottom sides, Lancashire and Gloucestershire. On paper, it is the kind of run-in coaches dream about. In reality, they must now negotiate it without the pace and control that Hasan has provided.
Director of cricket Simon Cook did not hide the sense of frustration, even as he accepted the inevitable pull of international duty.
“We’re disappointed to have lost Hasan’s services for the County Championship run-in, but we respect the decision made by the BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) after constructive talks, and wish him well this winter,” he told the club’s website.
The message was clear: Kent would have liked him for two more games. Bangladesh had other plans.
The responsibility now shifts to Kent’s remaining overseas seamers, Keith Dudgeon and Khaled Ahmed. Both stay available for the final stretch, and both will be asked to shoulder a heavier load with promotion on the line.
“While he will be a big miss, both of our other overseas bowlers, Keith Dudgeon and Khaled Ahmed, remain available for these last two matches of the summer,” Cook said.
So Kent enter the decisive fortnight with the table in reach, home advantage in their favour, and one of their main weapons gone. The opportunity is still there. The margin for error just got smaller.
