Marnus Labuschagne Returns to South Africa for Test Series

Marnus Labuschagne will walk back into the country of his birth next month still wearing the Baggy Green – and still under the microscope.

The 32-year-old has been retained in Australia’s 16-man Test squad for the tour of South Africa, a clear show of faith from selectors despite more than three years without a Test century and a rising external drumbeat questioning his place at number three. He has been overlooked for the limited-overs sides, but not for the format that built his reputation.

This will be no routine away trip for Labuschagne. Born in South Africa and raised there until the age of 10, he has never played a Test in the country. Now he returns as a senior figure in Australia’s batting order, searching for the statement innings that has eluded him since his golden run earlier in the decade.

The squad, named for three Tests in Durban (October 9-13), Gqeberha (October 18-22) and Cape Town (October 27-31), blends hardened campaigners with ambitious hopefuls.

Pat Cummins again leads a pace attack that includes Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland, with Nathan Lyon the frontline spinner. Steve Smith, Travis Head and Cameron Green form the core of the batting alongside Labuschagne, while Alex Carey and Josh Inglis cover the keeping duties.

The fresh intrigue sits beneath that top layer.

Cooper Connolly, the powerful left-hander whose ball-striking has turned heads domestically, has been called into the Test squad, a significant nod towards his long-format potential. Spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who has already tasted international cricket in other formats, joins him as another option in conditions that can demand patience and craft.

Michael Neser, like Labuschagne a South Africa-born Australian, returns to the fold as a seam-bowling all-round option. His ability to exploit helpful surfaces with the new ball and contribute valuable lower-order runs gives the attack extra flexibility, especially on pitches that can nip and seam for long periods.

Matthew Renshaw and Beau Webster round out a group that is largely built on the core that contested the second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay last month, with these three – Connolly, Kuhnemann and Neser – the key additions.

For Labuschagne, the storyline writes itself: a return to the land where his life began, a format that still defines him, and a drought he knows cannot run forever. South Africa will test that resolve – and the selectors’ faith – ball by ball.
