Mukesh Kumar Joins Nottinghamshire for County Championship Push

Mukesh Kumar, the India seamer with a hard-earned reputation in the grind of domestic cricket, has been drafted into Nottinghamshire’s push to retain the County Championship title.

The 32-year-old, who played the last of his three Tests for India against England earlier in 2024, arrives at Trent Bridge at a decisive moment. Nottinghamshire sit second in Division One, only four points behind leaders Somerset with two matches left. The margins are thin. So is the patience of a title race.

Kumar brings with him 233 first-class wickets, all of them taken in India, all of them shaped by unforgiving pitches and long spells. This is his first venture into county cricket, a late-career leap into English conditions that have made and broken overseas seamers for generations.

He does not come in cold. Just days before signing, Kumar took 3-62 to help East Zone beat South Zone in the Duleep Trophy final, securing the title for the first time in 14 years. That performance underlined why Nottinghamshire moved when they did: a bowler in rhythm, with the confidence of a trophy still fresh.

Head coach Peter Moores described Kumar as a “quality” addition at “a crucial time of the season” – a clear signal that this is not a speculative signing, but a targeted move to sharpen Nottinghamshire’s attack for the run-in.

Two games. Four points to make up. A reigning champion turning to a seasoned India seamer who knows how to bowl when pressure tightens. Kumar’s first spell in green and gold will tell plenty about how this title race ends.
