Usama Mir Returns to Worcestershire for County Championship

Worcestershire have gone back to a trusted weapon for the run-in, re-signing Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir for the rest of the County Championship season as cover for injured all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel.

It is a move born of urgency, but not of uncertainty. Mir knows New Road, and New Road knows him.

The 28-year-old returns for a second red-ball stint with the Pears, having made his first-class debut for the club in 2023. This time, the brief is clear: three Division Two matches, three chances to tilt tight games with the ball, starting with the home fixture against Northamptonshire on Tuesday.

Head Coach's Comments

Worcestershire head coach Alan Richardson made no attempt to hide his relief at landing a player already embedded in the club’s rhythms.

“Usama is someone we know very well and is a high-class operator who will bring plenty of experience to our side for the final three County Championship matches,” Richardson told the club’s website. The message was unmistakable: in a frantic few days, this was the calm, logical call.

The timing matters. The Championship schedule offers little breathing space, and Swanepoel’s absence forced Worcestershire into a race against the clock. “Given the short turnaround we had to act swiftly to find a replacement, so to be able to add him to the squad before Tuesday is a real boost for us,” Richardson said.

Mir does not arrive cold. He has already been part of the dressing room this year, having featured in white-ball cricket for Worcestershire after signing a three-year T20 deal earlier in the season. His leg-spin and lower-order hitting have become a familiar sight in the club’s limited-overs campaigns.

There is a longer story running beneath the short-term fix. From 2027, Mir will be classified as a ‘local’ player, a detail that underlines just how invested Worcestershire are in his future. This late-season Championship spell is not just a plug in a gap; it is another step in a relationship the club clearly expect to deepen.

For now, the equation is simple. Three games left. Promotion hopes, reputations and momentum on the line. And once again, Worcestershire turn to Usama Mir to give their season the sharp turn they need.
