Will Young Cleared for Warwickshire’s Title Challenge
Warwickshire’s push for the County Championship crown will have Will Young back at the top of the order next week, after a late and unexpected visa tangle briefly threatened to derail his season.
The 33-year-old New Zealand Test opener, re-signed in June to cover the Bears’ final six red-ball fixtures from August, had cruised through his first four matches without fuss. Then the phone rang.
On the morning of Warwickshire’s game against Essex at Chelmsford, with players lacing up and final plans being made, Young was contacted by the England and Wales Cricket Board over a visa issue. The same problem also caught up with his New Zealand team-mate Henry Nicholls, who is on a parallel six-game stint with Somerset.
Warwickshire received the bombshell at 10:20 BST – ten minutes before the scheduled start. Young was suddenly unavailable. The Bears had no choice but to rip up the team sheet.
The club later issued a short statement: “Will Young was unavailable for selection due to an outstanding visa matter that has since been resolved between his agent and the ECB.”
Somerset, facing the same bureaucratic storm, got their break earlier. Nicholls’ clearance landed the night before. Warwickshire’s didn’t arrive until 10:20, by which time the umpires were already walking out.
By then, the Bears had moved on. Zen Malik was recalled to open, a late switch that could easily have unsettled a side chasing the title. Instead, he seized the chance, crafting a second-innings half-century that underpinned Warwickshire’s second successive two-day win.
“We had a tough few days,” first team coach Ian Westwood told BBC Radio WM. “Will got a call saying that he had a problem with his visa. The application is normally pretty standard and it had gone in via his agent. But it hadn’t come back and we were in a race against time. Everyone at the club did everything they could.
“I believe Somerset might have been in the same boat and theirs came though the night before. Ours came though at 20 past 10, which was a bit too late. It was too late to play in this game but he’s available for next week.”
Available – and badly needed.
Warwickshire have just come through a gruelling two-and-a-half week road trip with three straight wins over Hampshire, Glamorgan and Essex, each one tightening their grip on the title race. The final act comes at Edgbaston on 24 September, at home against relegation-threatened Leicestershire.
Young will walk out knowing the paperwork is finally in order. The stakes, on the other hand, have never been higher.
