Zaheer Khan Takes Charge as CSK Head Coach
Chennai Super Kings have made the first seismic move of the IPL 2027 cycle, handing the head coach’s role to former India left-arm quick Zaheer Khan and closing the book on Stephen Fleming’s remarkable 18-year stint with the franchise.
It is a striking appointment. Not just because Zaheer steps into one of the most secure and successful dugouts in T20 history, but because he does so on the heels of a coach who had come to define the very identity of CSK.
End of an era, start of another
Fleming’s departure had the feel of a slow, respectful goodbye rather than a jolt. The New Zealander, who has been at the heart of almost every major CSK chapter since the inaugural season, has moved on to a full-time role with England, becoming their men’s Test head coach in July.
Eighteen years of yellow. Multiple titles. A culture built around calm, continuity and clarity. Replacing that is no small task.
CSK have chosen a man who knows all about leading from the front in high-pressure environments.
Zaheer’s road to the hot seat
Zaheer retired from the IPL in 2017 after turning out for three franchises — Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals — and logging 100 matches and 102 wickets at 27.27. Those numbers sit alongside his towering India record: 610 wickets across formats, and a career built on skill, nous and big-match temperament.
Since hanging up his boots, he has quietly built a coaching and management résumé rather than trading purely on reputation. Mumbai Indians first brought him into the backroom in a significant way, appointing him Director of Cricket Operations ahead of IPL 2019. He later shifted into the role of head of global development, helping shape MI’s expanding multi-team ecosystem.
The league kept calling. For IPL 2025, Lucknow Super Giants named him mentor, tapping into his experience with fast bowlers and squad building. His stint there ended before the following season, leaving him free just as one of the most coveted coaching chairs in the game opened up.
CSK moved.
“An honour” and a challenge
Zaheer’s first words as head coach hit all the right notes but carried a hint of the competitor who once relished bowling at Chepauk.
"It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can't wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history," he said, via the franchise.
He knows what that cauldron feels like from the other side. Now he has to harness it.
CSK back their new architect
From the ownership down, the message from Chennai is clear: this is not a gamble, this is the next phase.
Rupa Gurunath, the team’s owner, framed the move as a natural fit for a club that has long prided itself on shrewd cricketing minds rather than flashy appointments.
"We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach for Chennai Super Kings. Zaheer's distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our setup. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of this franchise," she said.
The word “core” matters at CSK. Their success has been built on a spine that rarely changes, supported by role clarity and trust. Zaheer steps into that philosophy with his own reputation for mentoring young quicks and reading conditions.
Managing Director KS Viswanathan underlined exactly that.
“Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India's success in the 2000s. He's one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family," he said.
This is not just about nostalgia for the 2000s. It is about importing one of India’s sharpest tactical minds into a dressing room that expects to compete for titles every season.
A different kind of rebuild
CSK are not a franchise that tears everything down. They refresh, they recalibrate, they rarely panic. Zaheer’s task will be to evolve a proven template rather than rip it up.
He inherits a dressing room used to stability, a fan base that demands deep runs in every tournament, and a legacy shaped by Dhoni on the field and Fleming off it. That is both a cushion and a weight.
The new coach has already seen the IPL from almost every angle — player, mentor, operations head, development chief. Now he takes on the one role that offers no hiding place when the lights go up at Chepauk.
The Fleming era has finally closed. The Zaheer chapter starts with expectation, not patience.
